WAFO Program Helps Our Youngest Students Improve Their Math Skills

During this past week of the Warwick Area Farmworkers Organization Dulce Esperanza Summer Enrichment Program we focused on our youngest age group of children’s mathematics skills. The children spent a good deal of time with our math teachers team working on their math skills. The children learned about different numbers and worked on recognizing a given number visually. They practiced this skill and got reinforcement through repetition learning.

Then the team shifted gears to work on counting out loud and then again with objects. This included goodies like strawberry cream cakes that they also got to eat once they were done. The teaching staff held a small celebration for the students to recognize their success and much cake was eaten by our very good little cake counters!

The children also practiced arranging numbers to matched counted objects and drawing out numbers by hand. It was an exciting week of math and they really improved noticeably the by end of the week.

Thank you to our math teachers and student teachers, as well as, our other volunteers who worked with the children so diligently to improve their math skills. The children got a sense of accomplishment and this helped to bolster their math knowledge.
